反曙暮光

2025 - (ongoing)
Imagine looking down from above. A few low clouds trail long parallel shadows across the sky. Looking up from the ground though, those same rays converge and recede like railway tracks. This reversal of perspective mirrors how I’ve lived this past year in the Netherlands. These works here were made, or conceived, during that time.

Weather was the first thing I noticed. Clear days felt precious, and rainbows appeared more often precisely because of the rain. In a country that still actively uses its postal system, I began researching letters and postcards, these delayed forms of communication, and drawing a line between them and the fleeting weather. Both are about misalignment: between sending and receiving, between weather and mood.

“Untitled” (Messages from the Sun)
“无题”(来自太阳的讯息)Sun, stamps, screen print on one-way glass, stainless steel, 2026

Daylight passes through a postcard-sized sheet of one-way glass, casting a shadow on the ground. The front is a mirror of the sky; the back is printed with a postcard's frame and the sun's coordinates at that moment. Every twenty minutes, I stick a stamp in the upper right corner of the shadow — a stamp printed with the negative of the sky.

On the Resting Hemisphere

On a flight from Amsterdam back to Shanghai, I saw the Earth's terminator line on the time-zone map on the seatback screen. This unfolded map of a spherical shadow records our sleep, and under that shadow the double bed takes on two different states.

A video call across time zones. Photos of a sunset sky drift through the screen, settling on the wall of a room far away. They talk about their new lives, and slowly, the sky goes dark.
